Operation Healing Hope: A UM Intitative to End Obstetric Fistula

Birth Assistants Learn About Obstetric Fistula

Operation Healing Hope made a campaign stop in Liberia this summer! The aim was to find out what is happening on the ground to prevent and treat obstetric fistula and to rehabilitate fistula survivors. We visited UNFPA programs in the capital Monrovia as well as United Methodist fistula care programs at Camphor and Ganta United Methodist Missions. OHH Stories in new curriculum National Council of Churches study targets 18-30 age group
A newwebsite, fistulastories.org, was launched Fri. Sept. 11 by the Women's Ministries of the National Council of Churches (NCCCUSA). It features a curriculum for a fall study about obstetric fistula aimed toward college groups and younger women of faith. There are a range of personal stories including two contributions from the OHH summer mission to Liberia. One is the story of Rev. John Togba, who is the hospital chaplain at Ganta UMC Mission in northern Liberia. The other story relates an encounter Texas nurse Julie Warren had with a fistula patient at Ganta this past July.
